Travel Log: Philadelphia

Best Pizza Ever! The Aspargo at Barbuzzo with White Sauce, Truffle, Asparagus and Farm Egg

Ok, so I don’t have to travel far to get to Philadelphia anymore, but it is still one of my favorite places to wine and dine. Dare I say…I like it better than New York or Boston. The food is fabulous, the style is unique and the atmosphere is never pretentious. It is the city of the laid-back gourmet and I dig it. The best part is that simplicity wins out in most of the great Philly restaurants, so steal-worthy recipes are everywhere!!

The different neighborhoods are packed into neat little pockets of personality that make the city shine. Rittenhouse Square, Old City, Penn’s Landing, Midtown Village and much more house a vibrant and eclectic combination of shops, restaurants, performance art venues and residences. Philly is hoppin’!

Hotel Recommendation

The Loews Hotel: Right in the center of the action, the Loews is a great place to stay (comfy, classy and beautiful). With its own delicious eatery (Sole Food) that has steal-worthy recipes for summer seafood and a staff that is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, Loews Philadelphia is perfect for the tourist or the local who doesn’t want to drive home. If you bring a car, get the Philly Overnight package…parking is a pain!

The Sofitel: This fancy pants spot is a little too much for Philly in my opinion, but it is a definite guilty pleasure. The hotel bar even has Chic in the name – as if we can’t form our own opinions. It is a good place to see a few sports stars in town for various events and when is that not fun? I don’t think people who stay here actually eat, but it is close to everything so you don’t have to go hungry. You can hit up Reading Terminal for a portfolio of treats from either hotel.

Restaurant Recommendations

10 Arts by Eric Ripert: This restaurant is amazing for a special occasion. The bar area is also good place to start your night off. Executive Chef, Jennifer from Top Chef is a rock star and the food was amazing!!! All the elements of great dining came together: fresh food, portion size, menu variety and delish drink selection. Its a bit expensive, but for an impressive date or celebration, this Ritz Carlton restaurant will make you feel fancy!

Zavino: Zavino Wine Bar has delicious thin crust pizzas with steal-worthy topping combinations that will make you think you can definitely try this at home. The wine selection is delicious too, but the best part is the community table – a long table seating unrelated parties of various sizes. Bonus: sitting next to an awkward first date couple makes your meal taste better.

Barbuzzo: Part of what I refer to as the 13th Street Mafia, Barbuzzo is a delightful restaurant brought to you by the same people who own everything on 13th from restaurants to gourmet chocolate storefronts to markets in a centralized block. Try the Aspargo pizza topped with an egg – - which is now a favorite at home recipe – - and a delicious stuffed meatball, you won’t be sorry!

Alma de Cuba: Delicioso! I don’t know that the decor really speaks to the food…but I know that the food really speaks to my tummy. Modern Latin cuisine with bright flavors and little kicks of heat. A great place to test your palate and see if you can recreate the unique taste profiles that have been whipped up in this kitchen. I felt like I was in Havana for a few hours.

For those of you who choose liquid dinners, head to Bar! Just make sure to dine in before you go out. Not fancy (it’s a bar called Bar) and not even nice really, but you can get a delicious (and cheap) pickleback at this affordable, local watering hole. You won’t regret it…until the morning

Feeling Adventurous? Travel up to Pod (braving the undergrad crowds), a Steven Starr spot on UPenn’s campus in West Philadelphia. Make reservations on the weekend for a 10 person pod and create your own lighting mood. The sushi is fresh and the asian fusion menu will give you inspiration for your next 20 meals!

Travel Log: Boston

Lolitas Sour Apple Cotton Candy with the check? Yes, Please!

Being a native Bostonian, it may seem odd to do a travel log about the city where I spent 28 years of my life. However, since moving to New Jersey and becoming immersed in incredibly different surroundings, every once in a while I get a hankering for home. Boston is one of those places that it always feels good to come back to. There is a reason that Cheers! was based in our historic city. Everyone really does know your name.

When you live there, the fact that everyone knows everyone can be a little daunting. But, in the same sense, it is a place where word of mouth is a way of life and it leads to some amazing experiences. For me, most of those experiences involve a fork and knife or an oversized wine glass (side note: oversized wine glasses + polite pour = disappointed patron). Boston has a restaurant at every other street address and while there are plenty of hot to trot scenester places, it is the hole in the wall, blink and you miss it restaurants that remain the amazingly well kept secret of the city’s “I know a guy” network.

Hotel Recommendation:

The Custom House Boston. Located on the edge of Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market! Usually a townie such as myself wouldn’t recommend a hotel in such a touristy area, but this one is amazing. For a reasonable price you can have city or harbor views, stay close to restaurants, walk to popular nightlife spots and even take a tour when no one is looking. The hotel itself is gorgeous and features an awesome clock tower, circular museum and traditional rooms.

The Onyx Hotel: This boutique hotel is perfect for a couple that is one part sports nut, one part cosmopolitan. It is steps away from the Garden – - home to the Boston Celtics and Bruins. On the other hand, they host a wine hour every evening in the lobby. Being a fan of sports and wine, for me this hotel is definitely the best of both worlds. The funky decor and swanky colors are an added bonus!

Restaurant Recommendations:

Lolita Cocina and Tequila Bar: Underground restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay where the tequila list is as long as the menu! Instead of mints with your check, you get a massive tuft of cotton candy (brilliant), a complimentary pre-dinner concoction of tequila on smoking dry ice cleanses your palate and everyone in the place looks like they showed up to shoot an ad for the restaurant. On top of the wow factor, the food is absolutely delicious!! Steal-Worthy Recipe: Salmon Coco (Grilled Salmon with Lime Broth served over Black Bean and Plantain Mash)

Cafe Pompeii: The North End is known for amazing Italian food. Cafe Pompeii isn’t amazing, but it is worth stopping by to see the enormous line of 20 somethings winding down their night with an oversized slice of pizza or a rice ball with sauce (sounds awful…but it will make for a softer landing if you’ve been out all night). Steal-Worthy Recipe: who cares its 2:00 am!

Zen: Sushi in Boston can be found on every corner. Some of the well known Sushi spots like Oishii and Fugakyu are delicious, but not necessarily worth the astronomical price. Zen is located right off Boston Common and a block from the State House. Tiny and tucked away, you could walk right past it…DON’T! The sushi is delicious, probably because they get a fresh catch in daily and they have amazing fruit-infused sake (Plum = Yum). Steal-Worthy Recipe: Can’t make sushi, but if I could, it would be the Tempura Shitake Mushroom Maki or the Crazy Maki.

For those of your who choose to Dine In, as I often do, there are a ton of small markets throughout the Boston neighborhoods that specialize in authentic ingredients!

Travel Log: Miami (2/2011)

Miami heats up at The Delano Hotel

In a continuing effort to eat my way across the country, I logged a trip to Miami, FL at the beginning of the month. While we did visit South Beach for dinner, I don’t think anyone was sticking to the South Beach Diet! Miami was a welcome break from the cold and snow and the cuisine was a perfect fit for the atmosphere. Fresh Seafood and Decadent Steaks were on the menu and they didn’t disappoint. Dining out is so 1995, but I love to try different restaurants on trips for recipe inspiration!

Arriving in Miami from the brisk and desolate Winter that has plagued the East Coast, the heat hits like a welcome slap in the face (if there is such a thing). Men and women in varying states of undress walk down the streets laughing, smiling and apparently oblivious to their fellow citizens who are blanketed in snow around the country. You would smile too if you lived in Miami. Everyone is attractive or at least “has a look” and everyone seems to be having a good time…all the time. In short, Miami has all the makings of the best people watching city in America!

It takes a bit for your glands to adjust and you feel a little dizzy from the fever, but once you settle in, your flush turns to a glow and you can slip seamlessly into an effortless lifestyle no matter what you are looking for. It is one of those rare places where each street has a different personality and background. My impression was that if Beverly Hills and South Central L.A. had a baby – - they would name it Miami. So head to Miami for a good tan, great shopping and delicious food, but make sure to travel with others at night and beware of the hefty price tag on fun.

Hotel Recommendation:

The Intercontinental Miami. This beautifully appointed hotel overlooks the cruise ships and has every amenity imaginable. You are just down the street from the American Airlines Arena (home of the Miami Heat) and some fun nightlife spots. However, it can get pricey and DON’T charge anything to the room, but if you’ve got it to burn…then burn your cash here!

The Delano Hotel: If you would rather be on South Beach then head to the Delano. This swanky Miami hotel is the place to see and be seen and looks a lot like a new age scene from Miami Vice. We walked through gauzily draped halls to the pool where the nightlife seemed to heat up in cabanas and dark corners for the well-paid and well-heeled.

Restaurant Recommendations:

STK: The name says it all. Simple Steakhouse that may be a little too trendy for its own good. The food was delicious, the price was outrageous, but if you don’t mind paying for celebrity sightings (which I don’t) then try your luck at STK. The service was so great and the recipes are definitely something you will want to imitate at home. Good music, good food, good night!

Blue Door Fish: This was South Beach Dining. Everything was fresh and heavily seafood based. The food was light and innovative with some combinations that will definitely be stolen for my own kitchen experimentation! The restaurant is in The Delano, so when you finish dinner you can stick around for cocktails and purposeful strutting.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.: To go a little lighter on the budget without losing any of the appetite quenching goodness, we went to Bubba Gump! The Shrimp were so big they were an oxymoron and the service was funny. I will definitely be imitating their Mahi Mahi and Veggie Skillet…YUM!

Travel Log: Las Vegas (12/2010)

Aria Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip

The first time I went to Las Vegas, it was for a bachelorette party. We had drinks and danced at Tao Nightclub, sunned and funned by the pool at the Four Seasons, spent several hours of shopping, had one very successful run at the roulette table and saw a show by Cirque de Soleil. All in all, it was a crazy, whirlwind trip that left six friends from college very tired and a little worse for the wear.

At the end of each evening, we recalled the crazy events of the day, talked about who we met, wiped off a little too much makeup and got some rest so we could do it all again.

More recently, when I returned to Las Vegas, it was under different circumstances. In town for a conference, I was 5 years older, a bit more mature and hoping to get to bed by 10:00 pm rather than 10:00 am! There was still some shopping involved, but that was in between several hours of meetings, networking events and breakout sessions.

At the end of each evening, my coworker and I decided where to go for dinner or a night cap to recall the not-so-crazy events of the day, talk about who we met and get some rest so we could do it all again.

Many people would think that going to Las Vegas for a conference isn’t as fun as going for a bachelorette party and before I left for my second trip, I would have thought the same. To tell you the truth though, the second time was a charm, because as a more seasoned traveler and foodie, I took a lot more from each acclaimed menu and lavish venue.

Hotel Recommendation: The Aria was an amazing place. It is new to the strip and arguably the best place to stay. From beautifully appointed rooms to well-integrated food and drink establishments, the Aria has it all. Best of all it is attached to a shopping plaza that only Las Vegas could house!

Restaurant Recommendations: Las Vegas is the unsung hero of modern cuisine. What happens in Vegas…stays in Vegas, but I wish I could have brought the restaurants home with me!

NOBU: Amazingly fresh sushi and innovative seasonal cocktails. This carries a heavy price tag, but it was worth it for a memorable dining experience (that I will try to recreate at home). It is also known for celeb sightings!

TODD ENGLISH PUB: Todd English is a favorite!! His “pub” fare surpasses any that I have had before. If you’ve never heard of a 5-Star Gourmet Pub…then you need to check out this fine dining bar food.
